The cobbles of Flanders are about to come alive once more as the cycling season shifts into its most beloved gear. Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, that most cherished of curtain-raisers, returns to kick off the Belgian spring classics season with all the drama and brutality that has made it an institution on the racing calendar. Coming before even Strade Bianche gets underway in earnest, Omloop holds a special place as the moment when the long winter finally feels like it is over and the serious business of northern classics racing can begin.

The 2025 edition follows a route that remains faithful to the spirit of the race, threading through the Flemish Ardennes with its iconic climbs and stretches of cobblestones. The Molenberg, the Leberg, the Berendries and the Vieux Quaremont all feature, testing riders both physically and tactically across a race that demands constant vigilance. The Bosberg and the Muur van Geraardsbergen do not feature in the finale as they once did in years gone by, but the course retains more than enough difficulty to sort the contenders from those merely hoping to survive.

Tadej Pogacar will not be on the start line, allowing the classics specialists to take centre stage without the shadow of the Slovenian phenomenon looming over proceedings. That opens the door for a fascinating battle among the established cobbled classics elite. Mathieu van der Poel arrives with his customary air of menace, the Alpecin-Deceuninck leader always a frightening prospect on terrain that suits his explosive power and ability to read a race with rare intelligence. His palmares already includes victories in this race and he will be expected to feature prominently once more.

Wout van Aert represents perhaps the most compelling storyline heading into the opening weekend. The Visma-Lease a Bike rider is a former winner of Omloop and carries with him an intensity of focus that can make him almost impossible to contain when he arrives at a race fully motivated and in good condition. His winter preparation will come under scrutiny as always, but there is every reason to believe he will be among the favourites by the time the race reaches its decisive phase.

Lidl-Trek will lean heavily on Mads Pedersen, who has developed into one of the most reliable and dangerous performers in this part of the calendar. The Dane has the versatility to survive the climbs while retaining the finishing speed and aggression to win from a reduced group or a well-timed late attack. Tom Pidcock is another name to watch, the Ineos Grenadiers rider eager to make his mark in a discipline where many believe his abilities have yet to be fully realised.

The women's race runs on the same day and deserves equal attention. Lotte Kopecky on home roads is always a potent force, the SD Worx-Protime leader combining climbing ability with the kind of race intelligence that has made her one of the dominant figures in women's cycling over recent seasons. Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo Borghini and Marianne Vos will all be present to challenge her ambitions.

Weather will play its traditional role in shaping the narrative. An early season race in the Belgian lowlands is never far from the threat of cold rain, crosswinds and the kind of conditions that can reduce the strongest riders to desperate survival mode. Whatever the forecast, the riders who prosper will be those willing to suffer and willing to take risks at the right moment.

Omloop does not offer the prestige of the Monument classics that follow later in the spring, but it offers something arguably more valuable at this stage of the year, a first genuine glimpse of who has arrived at the season in the sharpest condition and who possesses the hunger and courage to chase victory when the roads get hard and the peloton begins to fracture. Saturday cannot come soon enough.
