Race Recap
Pogacar Adds Another Trophy to the Mantle at Fleche Wallonne
Despite the chilly and rainy conditions at La Flèche Wallonne, the race unfolded in its usual exciting manner. As is tradition, it all came down to the final ascent of the Mur de Huy. Tadej Pogacar confidently took control in the last 500 metres and powered his way to victory, marking his second win in this beloved Ardennes classic.
Siebe De Weirdt, Simon Guglielmi, Artem Shmidt, Ceriel Desal, and Tom Paquot were the brave souls who sparked the breakaway. This spirited quintet quickly established a 2-minute lead, but that was all they could garner.
As the gap began to dwindle below a minute, Tobias Foss and Robert Stannard made their move, bridging across to join the leaders. Andreas Leknessund and Fredrik Dversnes followed suit shortly after. While Deweirdt fell back, the remaining attackers managed to regain their 2-minute advantage.
Defending champion Stephen Williams found it tough to keep up with the peloton during the first climb of the finishing circuit, and on the first ascent of the Mur de Huy, Paquot could not hold on at the front. By that point, the peloton had closed in to within 1 minute of the breakaway, adding to the tension.
As Mattias Skjelmose hit the ground, Foss, Leknessund, and Dversnes were the only attackers tackling the Mur de Huy for the penultimate time. Even though their advantage shrank to just 13 seconds at the summit, they hung on as they approached the Côte de Cherave.
UAE Emirates worked hard to reduce the peloton to just thirty riders on the Cherave, and the leading group stuck together until the final 500 metres. Then, Tadej Pogačar burst forward as if the Mur de Huy had no 10% gradient in sight. His lead quickly grew so large that his rivals were practically on the ropes. It was victory for the world champion, with Kévin Vauquelin finishing in second place, 10 seconds behind, and Tom Pidcock rounding out the podium, just 12 seconds back.
