Pogačar Achieves Fifth Lombardy Victory, Securing Golden Treble

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates XRG) added another remarkable chapter to his career by winning his fifth Tour of Lombardy on Saturday, thanks to his signature long-distance solo break that clearly demonstrated his dominance in the “Race of the Falling Leaves.”

The Slovenian star initiated his winning move 37 kilometers from the finish at Passo di Ganda, leaving all rivals behind and riding solo into Bergamo. He finished comfortably ahead of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), who completed the podium.

This victory marked Pogačar’s 50th solo triumph and his fifth Lombardy title, tying the record held by Italian legend Fausto Coppi. It capped an exceptional three-week run during which he also claimed victories at the World Championships, European Championships, and Tre Valli Varesine.

“People think it’s easy for me to win,” Pogačar stated before the race. “It’s not, especially on challenging courses like this one.” By the end, he proved once again that he can make even the toughest races seem effortless.

The 238-kilometre route from Como to Bergamo featured 4,400 metres of climbing, including the ascents of Madonna del Ghisallo and Passo di Ganda. An early breakaway of 14 riders animated the first half of the race, with Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) making a daring solo move over the Passo della Crocetta with 80 kilometres remaining.

Throughout the race, Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates XRG kept control, steadily closing the gap on the escapees as they approached the final climbs. When teammate Jay Vine finished his effort on the Ganda, Pogačar made a decisive surge, bridging to and quickly passing Simmons.

In pursuit, only Evenepoel and Storer remained, but they never threatened Pogačar. Evenepoel experienced a brief setback behind race motorcycles in the final kilometers but was already out of contention.

By the time the new world champion reached the cobbles of Colle Aperto and sped downhill into Bergamo’s Viale Roma, victory was assured. He raised his arms in celebration of sweeping the autumn classics.

For Evenepoel, it was his second consecutive runner-up finish in Lombardy, while Storer’s third place marked Tudor Pro Cycling's first podium in a Monument race.

Pogačar’s victory not only matches Coppi’s record but also makes him the first rider to complete the World Championships and Lombardy double twice.
