2025 Giro d'Italia Stage 9 Results & Recap
Stage 9 of the 2025 Giro d'Italia is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The Strade Bianche at the Giro culminated in a showdown between Wout van Aert and Isaac Del Toro. The two riders stuck together up the steep ascent into Siena’s historic town, where the Flemish powerhouse claimed the sprint, allowing the young Mexican to don the pink jersey.
Kaden Groves, Dries De Bondt, Milan Fretin, and Quinten Hermans launched their attack right from the start, with Taco van der Hoorn and Luke Lamperti chasing after them. They successfully caught up after a 20-kilometre pursuit.
The breakaway built a maximum lead of 3 minutes before reaching the first stretch of gravel 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.
As they hit the tarmac again, Groves and Hermans were the only riders remaining, but their lead had narrowed to under one minute. Meanwhile, pink jersey holder Diego Ulissi had fallen behind the peloton.
When they transitioned to the second gravel segment, Michael Storer crashed, followed by Tom Pidcock and Primoz Roglic. Shortly after, the front of what was left of the peloton caught up with the two attackers as Roglic experienced further trouble with a flat tyre.
On the San Martino in Grania gravel section, the lead group consisted of Wout van Aert, Egan Bernal, Isaac del Toro, Brandon Smith Rivera, and Thymen Arensman, though the Dutchman lost touch due to mechanical issues. He found himself in a chasing group with Juan Ayuso, Antonio Tiberi, and Simon Yates.
Mathias Vacek was also part of that group, but not for long — once back on the road, the Czech rider impressively closed the gap to the four leaders with a strong solo effort.
In the brief fourth gravel sector, Del Toro accelerated, with only Van Aert able to keep pace. However, once back on the road, Bernal and Vacek managed to rejoin.
Del Toro made another move on the Colle Pinzuto, and once again, Van Aert was the only rider able to stay with him. The young Mexican secured 6 bonus seconds at the summit.
