Race Recap
Groves Wins in Naples
Kaden Groves won a chaotic sprint in Naples. In a stage marred by a major crash, he beat Milan Fretin and Paul Magnier to the line. Mads Pedersen didn’t contest the sprint but retained the maglia rosa.
Felix Engelhardt, Ben Turner, Manuele Tarozzi, Josef Cerny, Michel Ries, and KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato initiated the breakaway, while Lorenzo Germani tracked them down. They opened a 1-minute lead, but the gap narrowed again when Mathias Vacek, Joshua Tarling, Davide Formolo, Jan Tratnik, and Lucas Hamilton took up the chase — with the peloton pursuing the chasers.
The race came back together after 30 kilometres of action, and then Taco van der Hoorn set off with Enzo Paleni in tow. The two opened up a 3-minute lead before Lorenzo Fortunato and Lucas Hamilton began their chase on the Valico di Monte Carruozzo. The King of the Mountains soon dropped his companion to close in on the others. He took 18 points at the summit before sitting up and waiting for the peloton.
The breakaway riders opened up a maximum lead of 5 minutes, while rain started to fall as the stage progressed. Consequently, the roads in southern Italy became treacherously slippery, leading to a major crash in the peloton. Jai Hindley, Dion Smith, and Juri Hollmann were the worst affected and were forced to abandon, while the race was temporarily neutralised.
With 60 kilometres remaining, the race restarted. At that point, the breakaway’s lead was down to 1 minute.
As the finishing times didn’t count due to the wet conditions, and with no maglia ciclamino points on offer either, maglia rosa Mads Pedersen decided to take it easy with 30 kilometres to go.
The two attackers held a 30-second lead over the peloton with 6 kilometres to go. However, it wasn’t enough, as they were caught 3 kilometres later.
Just before the flamme rouge, Jensen Plowright opened up a gap and Wout van Aert gave chase. He overhauled the Australian and pushed on, but his effort came to nothing when the sprinters made their final burst. Olav Kooij was boxed in on the left-hand side, while Kaden Groves powered to a clear-cut victory down the centre.
Mads Pedersen rolled in minutes later, but with times neutralised, he kept hold of the maglia rosa.
