Yates Rides for Redemption, Harper Takes Stage
Breakaway rider Chris Harper drops Alessandro Verre on the gravel section of the Colle delle Finestre, while Simon Yates launches his attack on the lower slopes. His teammate Wout van Aert waits for him on the descent, and the pair race to the finish together. Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz throw the Giro away by marking each other too closely, and the overall victory goes to Yates
The breakaway initially included Timo Kielich, Sylvain Moniquet, Dries De Bondt, Enzo Paleni, Kim Heiduk, Jacopo Mosca, and Gianmarco Garofoli. After 30 kilometers, Mads Pedersen, Ethan Hayter, Francesco Busatto, Carlos Verona, Jon Barrenetxea, and Manuele Tarozzi managed to bridge across. Another 10 kilometers later, Martin Marcellusi, Fran Miholjević, Quinten Hermans, Jimmy Janssens, Alessandro Verre, Pello Bilbao, Andrea Vendrame, Kevin Geniets, Quentin Pacher, Rémy Rochas, Kevin Colleoni, Simon Clarke, Carlos Verona, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Milan Vader, Chris Harper, Chris Hamilton, Mirco Maestri, and Wout van Aert turned the front of the race into a small peloton. As they hit the Colle delle Finestre, their advantage stood at 10 minutes.
Verre and Harper pressed on together on the climb. On the lower slopes, Richard Carapaz attacked from the peloton. Isaac Del Toro was quick to respond, with Simon Yates bridging across later.
After a series of probing attacks, Yates got away and immediately opened up a solid gap. Behind him, Derek Gee joined Carapaz and Del Toro. But when the Ecuadorian accelerated, the Canadian lost ground again.
Yates kept extending his lead over his rivals, helped by Del Toro’s refusal to work with Carapaz. The hesitation even led to brief standstills, giving Gee the chance to latch back on.
Harper dropped Verre on the gravel section of the Finestre before reaching the summit with a gap of a minute and a half.
Nearly 5 minutes after Harper, Yates arrived at the summit, with Del Toro and Carapaz trailing the Brit by 1 minute and 40 seconds.
On the descent, Yates caught up with his teammate Van Aert, who took him under his wing. At the same time, the cooperation between Del Toro and Carapaz lacked.
