An Italian Job

In rainy conditions, Wout van Aert, Joshua Tarling, Lorenzo Germani, Xabier Mikel Azparren, Jon Barrenetxea, Josef Cerny, and Darren Rafferty broke away after approximately 10 kilometres. Tarling crashed on the slick road surface and had to abandon, while the remaining six riders approached the first climb nearly 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.

KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato, along with Simon Guglielmi, Pello Bilbao, Sylvain Moniquet, Dries De Bondt, David Gaudu, Kim Heiduk, Simone Petilli, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Felix Engelhardt, Gijs Leemreize, Davide Bais, Mattia Bais, Yannis Voisard, Alessio Martinelli, Fausto Masnada, Luca Covili, and Christian Scaroni, closed in on the leaders during the climb. At the summit, Fortunato increased his lead in the mountain classification, after which the breakaway group achieved a maximum advantage of 9 minutes in the subsequent part of the race.

Halfway through, Alessio Martinelli fell out of the leading group due to a crash, while Primoz Roglic also withdrew from the peloton.

The lead of the breakaway then decreased to 6 minutes, but by the time they arrived at the foot of the Passo di Santa Barbara, the gap had widened back to 9 minutes.

The distance shrank quickly as EF Education–EasyPost set a fast pace on the climb. Juan Ayuso and Thymen Arensman fell behind, and at the same time, the breakaway’s advantage dropped below 5 minutes.

With the breakaway consisting of Leemreize, Fortunato, Bilbao, Moniquet, Cepeda, Voisard, and Scaroni, Bernal was dropped from the peloton but managed to work his way back up.

Voisard made a move on the descent of Santa Barbara and began the final climb with a lead of half a minute. With 13 kilometres to go, he was joined by Fortunato, Cepeda, and Scaroni. Moments later, these three left him behind as Giulio Pellizzari launched an attack from the GC group.

In the final 10 kilometres of the San Valentino climb, the XDS-Astana team showcased their strength. First, Scaroni attacked, followed by Fortunato who caught up with his teammate. On the lower slopes, Simon Yates surged ahead, with Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz following closely behind, while Derek Gee managed to bridge the gap later on.

Carapaz then led the attack, prompting Gee to make his move as well. Behind them, Yates and Del Toro were briefly joined by Michael Storer, but the pink jersey holder struggled to keep up with the rapid pace.
