Verona Solos to Triumph, Del Toro Retains Pink

Early on the final climb of the day, with over 40 kilometres to go, Carlos Verona dropped his companions in the lead group. The Spaniard soloed to victory, while Isaac del Toro retained the overall lead ahead of Simon Yates and Juan Ayuso. Primoz Roglic lost valuable time.

Attacks flew from the start, but it took 70 kilometres for a large group to break clear. On board were KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato, Pello Bilbao, Bart Lemmen, Mattia Cattaneo, Marco Frigo, Georg Steinhauser, Daniel Felipe MartĂnez, Louis Meintjes, Einer Rubio, Gianmarco Garofoli, Nicolas Prodhomme, Luke Plapp, Filippo Zana, Mathias Vacek, Davide De Pretto, and Nicola Conci. Their maximum lead reached nearly 4 minutes.

Vacek, De Pretto, and Conci broke away in the run-up to the Monte Grappa, but it all came back together on the climb. There were several attacks on the ascent, but none of them stuck.

With 2 kilometres to the summit, Egan Bernal accelerated in the peloton. Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz bridged across, followed later by Thymen Arensman and Derek Gee. They crested the climb a little over a minute down on the leaders, while the other GC riders followed 30 seconds later.

After Fortunato was first over the top, Frigo went solo on the descent. By the time they hit the valley floor, the chase groups had merged. Pello Bilbao, Nicolas Prodhomme, Filippo Zana, Filippo Fiorelli, Christian Scaroni, Carlos Verona, Gianmarco Garofoli, Romain Bardet, Bart Lemmen, and Florian Stork then tracked the lone leader down. The group tackled the climb to Dori more than 3 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Verona broke away early on the ascent. Garofoli tried to join the move but didn’t succeed. With 5 kilometres to go to the summit, Zana caught up to him.

Richard Carapaz attacked from the peloton. Most of the GC contenders followed, but Primoz Roglic was distanced. Meanwhile, Verona crested the summit 12 seconds ahead of the two chasers.

In the final phase, Verona pulled further and further away from Zana and Garofoli. In fact, the two were joined by the chasing group.

While Verona soloed to victory, Stork attacked in the closing kilometre to take second place, with Scaroni winning the sprint for third.

The GC contenders finish shortly after, gaining a minute and a half on Roglic. Del Toro maintains the overall lead ahead of Yates and Ayuso.
