Stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia spans 180 kilometers, transporting the riders from Rovigno to a punchy finish in Vicenza. The final climb, Monte Berico, features a 1.1-kilometer ascent at an average gradient of 7.5%. Along the predominantly flat route, there are several similar climbs to challenge the riders' legs.

Legend has it that in the years 1426 and 1428, the Virgin Mary appeared on Monte Berico to a humble farmworker. The Veneto region had been enduring the plague for years, and she informed him that if the people of Vicenza erected a church on the hill, they would be liberated from the Black Death.

And so they did. Today, the Basilica of Saint Mary stands proudly atop Monte Berico. Achieving this will require 1.1 kilometers of effort at a 7.5% gradient, with the slope steepening along the way. The harshest section, a punishing 11%, comes just before the finish line.

Ten years ago, the Giro last concluded on Monte Berico, with Philippe Gilbert powering to victory. He surged ahead of his rivals on the final climb, crossing the line three seconds in front of Alberto Contador and Diego Ulissi.

The approach to this year’s finish on Monte Berico is straightforward. Aside from the Passo Roverello (3.4 kilometers at 6.6%), the first 122 kilometers are pancake-flat. After that, the riders face a series of climbs: 1.3 kilometers at 7.1% (uncategorized), 5 kilometers at 6.7%, 1.2 kilometers at 6.8%, and 1.8 kilometers at 6.4%. From the final descent, it’s merely 5 kilometers to the base of Monte Berico.
