Race Recap
Double Rainbow for Kopecky
It was raining and cold, making the World Championships road race even more challenging. It came down to a six-up sprint, and Lotte Kopecky took the win. Chloé Dygert and Elisa Longo Borghini finished second and third.
Caroline Baur initiated the first breakaway early in the race, while Sara Martín and Nina Berton joined her. The three opened a gap of almost 2 minutes.
Berton dropped her companions with 105 kilometres remaining. Moments later, the peloton overhauled her.
The next break featured Justine Ghekiere, Riejanne Markus, Sarah Gigante, Urska Zigart, Elena Hartmann, Christine Majerus, Mie Bjørndal Ottestad, Franziska Koch, Soraya Paladin, Mischa Bredewold and Niamh Fisher-Black. Their lead widened to 35 seconds.
The second breakaway was reeled in around the halfway marker of the race. The peloton was down to some forty riders at that point.
Ten riders remained in the penultimate lap at the front as Neve Bradbury attacked. Demi Vollering tracked her down before Elisa Longo Borghini brought the others back in contention. Then Caroline Andersson gave it a go.
Riejanne Markus took over the attack, while Justine Ghekiere rejoined her. The two opened a lead of almost 1 minute.
Marianne Vos and Ruby Roseman-Gannon bridged across with 33 kilometres to go. The quartet entered the last lap with an advantage of 1 minute.
After the Zürichbergstrasse, a group with Lotte Kopecky, Chloé Dygert, Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo Borghini, and Liane Lippert went after the four.
Longo Borghini, Vollering, and Lippert made the junction on the Witikonerstrasse. Markus lost contact before being caught by Dygert and Kopecky.
As Vos was dropped, she was caught by Dygert and Kopecky. The three rejoined the front inside the last 14 kilometes. Moments later, Markus was present as well.
Vollering accelerated on the last uphill section, dropping Vos, Markus, and Ghekiere before Longo Borghini struck with 5.5 kilometers to go. Vollering, Kopecky, and Lippert regained contact after a chase of almost 1 kilometre.
