The roads of Tuscany once again provide the backdrop for one of cycling's most captivating spring classics, as the peloton prepares to tackle the white gravel roads that have made Strade Bianche one of the most beloved races on the calendar. The 2024 edition promises another day of attrition, beauty, and unexpected drama as the route winds through the Sienese countryside before finishing on the legendary Via Santa Caterina in the heart of Siena.

The race covers around 215 kilometres for the men, with the famous sectors of white gravel roads, known as strade bianche, providing the decisive moments that separate the contenders from the rest. The combination of loose terrain, punishing gradients, and the unpredictable Tuscan weather creates a race unlike any other, one that rewards both strength and technical skill in equal measure.

Tadej Pogacar arrives as a dominant favourite after his stunning victory in 2022 and his general brilliance across all terrains. The Slovenian superstar from UAE Team Emirates has shown an almost supernatural ability to perform on these roads, and his capacity to accelerate on the climbs while handling the gravel sections with ease makes him the man to beat. Defending champion Tom Pidcock will be eager to show that his 2023 victory was no fluke, and the Ineos Grenadiers rider thrives in conditions that demand versatility and courage.

Mathieu van der Poel brings his extraordinary punch and gravel handling skills to the start in Siena, and the Dutchman is always a threat in a race where raw power and bike handling converge. Wout van Aert, riding for Visma Lease a Bike, will be motivated to add his name to the roll of honour, and his consistency across classics terrain makes him a constant danger throughout the day.

The strade bianche sectors themselves are the true architects of the race. Sector eleven, the famous Tolfe climb, and the brutal final sector leading into Siena on the Colle Malamerenda strip have historically been the launchpad for race-winning moves. Any rider nursing a puncture or a mechanical through these sections can find a race unravelling in moments, adding an element of fortune alongside the inevitable suffering.

Weather will once again play its part. Rain transforms the white roads into something treacherous, coating riders in a thick grey mud that has become one of the defining visual images of modern cycling. Dry conditions bring clouds of chalk-white dust and a different kind of brutality, as the loose surface saps energy from the legs across kilometre after kilometre.

The womens race, which has grown enormously in prestige and quality, features Annemiek van Vleuten in what could be one of her final seasons, alongside younger rivals like Lotte Kopecky and Demi Vollering who will be hungry to assert themselves as the new generation of one-day specialists. The dynamics of that race could be equally compelling, with the finale on the cobbled climb into Siena guaranteed to produce an electrifying conclusion.

Few races in the world carry the atmosphere and the romance of Strade Bianche. The medieval city of Siena, the rolling hills, the cypress trees, and those extraordinary white roads combine to create something genuinely unique. Whatever unfolds on the roads of Tuscany, the day will almost certainly deliver the kind of images and moments that remind cycling fans why this race has become so essential in such a short time.
