The cobblestones of northern France will once again provide the ultimate test of toughness and tactical racing when the peloton rolls out for the women's edition of the Hell of the North. After Elisa Longo Borghini claimed a stunning victory in 2023, the Italian champion arrives as one of the headline names in a field packed with talent capable of surviving the brutality of the pavé sectors that define this unique race.

Longo Borghini's win last year demonstrated that pure classics power combined with smart racing can overcome even the most punishing cobbled roads, and the Lidl-Trek leader will be determined to defend her crown. However, she faces fierce competition from a number of rivals who have been targeting this race specifically since the spring campaign began.

Marianne Vos remains a constant threat whenever she lines up, and the veteran Dutch rider's ability to read a race and produce a devastating finish means she can never be discounted, even on terrain that might theoretically favour bigger, more powerful riders. Her SD Worx-Protime team is stacked with options and could play a decisive tactical game across the cobbled sectors.

Demi Vollering, fresh from continued dominance in stage racing, will look to prove her one-day credentials once again on roads that demand something rawer than climbing purity. Her teammate Lotte Kopecky, the Flemish champion who thrives on rough roads, is arguably among the favourites given her performances across the spring and her ability to handle technically demanding surfaces at high speed.

Alison Jackson of EF Education-Cannondale will carry expectations after her strong recent performances, while Elisa Balsamo and other Italian riders will be hoping to bring further Mediterranean flair to a race dominated in its short history by powerful northern European competitors.

The race will hinge on the famous Arenberg Forest, where the pavé is at its most punishing and gaps open with brutal suddenness. Teams will need to position their leaders perfectly going into that sector, as crashes and mechanical failures can end ambitions in seconds on those uneven stones. The later sectors around Camphin-en-Pévèle and the run into the Roubaix velodrome will separate any remaining contenders, with the velodrome finish providing a dramatic conclusion that rewards both endurance and sprinting ability.

Weather will play its traditional role in shaping the race. Wet cobbles transform the event into something even more treacherous, while dry conditions can allow stronger riders to impose themselves with pure power rather than sheer bike-handling nerve.

This race has grown enormously in prestige since its revival and now stands as one of the most anticipated days on the women's cycling calendar, delivering drama and spectacle that matches the men's edition in emotional intensity if not in total duration.
