Jorgenson wins Paris Nice, Evenepoel claims final stage
Matteo Jorgenson won the overall classification of Paris Nice today after pulling away with Remco Evenepoel on the Cote de Peille today. The duo, including Aleksandr Vlasov who was dropped later, went on to put more than two minutes on the yellow jersey of Brandon McNulty (UAE Emirates) during the 109 km mountain finale. Evenepoel won the stage and finished second overall, and McNulty hung on with enough time to stay on the podium.
“If you’ve seen my attacks today, only one guy could follow, it was Matteo," Evenepoel said. "He deserved to win. I attacked three times on Cote de Peille, he was the only one to follow. Of course Vlasov jumped across but he left a lot of energy in so doing and Matteo is the deserved winner of this race. I should be more than happy for the ending of this beautiful week. Today, we wanted to set the pace, but the bunch split completely with that nasty crash. I was always in a good position. I did very well in this respect this week. When I saw there were only 11 riders left, I decided to try and attack. I put a lot of fatigue on everybody. That’s how you win a race, by suffering and going all in. In the last climb, the Cote des Quatre chemins, I went as fast as I could to drop Vlasov and then in the last kilometres I waited for my sprint and I still had something left. I’m not bad but I can still grow a little bit. I can still improve.”
Jorgenson, who trains in Nice but is a California native, said that he never expected to win Paris Nice.
“Until this year, I never thought it was possible. But here we are. It could not have gone any better today and the whole week. It’s really not sunk in yet. I could barely sleep last night. I was so nervous. I felt pressure for the first time in my life. To ride with such a champion as Remco was a very special moment, almost in front of my house actually. It was a complicated situation this morning, so many scenarios could happen. To be honest, I just had to expect the unexpected and be ready for anything. I knew this course from my heart and I could tell you any single corner, the key points in front of all the splits and all the crashes. I want to thank all the guys in the team and my team for giving me the opportunity to lead a World Tour race in my first year. It’s very special. Now I’m not going to get ahead of myself. It’s already a great achievement in my life. I will now try to enjoy it and keep my feet on the ground.” \n
