Pogacar wins once again

After the GC group stayed together on the Prati di Tivo finishing climb, Tadej Pogacar outsprinted Daniel Felipe Martínez in commanding style to further extend his lead on the GC.

The route climbed from the start, and attacks flew from the start as well. Ewen Costiou and Georg Steinhauser reached the summit of the first climb with a small lead. Martin Marcellusi bridged across in the valley.

At the Forca di Capistrello, a new lead group emerged, strategically composed of Jhonatan Narváez, Alessandro Verre, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Georg Steinhauser, Nairo Quintana, Pelayo Sánchez, Julian Alaphilippe, Romain Bardet, Alessandro De Marchi, Michael Storer, Martin Marcellusi, Magnus Sheffield, Henok Mulubhran and Simon Geschke. Steinhauser, Geschke and Bardet launched an attack from this group, later joined by Paret-Peintre.

Geschke took most KOM points at the top, while Narváez, Sheffield, Verre, and Alaphilippe rejoined the leaders on the descent. The other attackers made it back with 100 kilometres remaining. They raced to a lead of 2.30 minutes.

Geschke moved up to second place in the KOM competition by taking the most points at the Croce Abbio as well.

When the lead group entered the finishing climb, the gap was down to 30 seconds. Early on the slopes, Verre headed out alone, but Paret-Peintre went on the counterattack. The peloton gobbled up the other attackers within the last 10 kilometers while Lutsenko couldn’t follow the pace.

For a few kilometres, Paret-Peintre raced 20 seconds ahead of the main group. With 4.2 kilometres to go, the catch was made.

In the final 2 kilometres, Antonio Tibert made several attempts to break away, but Pogacar was quick to shut them down. In the end, it was Daniel Felipe Martínez who initiated the sprint, only to be overtaken by the pink jersey, who clinched the stage win with a comfortable lead.
