Race Recap
Sánchez wins stage 6
After a thrilling race that wound its way through the captivating landscapes of Tuscany, the tension reached its peak in a three-way sprint. Pelayo Sánchez emerged victorious, outpacing the formidable Julian Alaphilippe and Luke Plapp. Meanwhile, Tadej Pogacar held on to the coveted maglia rosa, adding to the excitement of the race.
There was a lot of movement from the start, but there was still no break when the riders tackled the climb to Volterra. Then Valentin Paret-Peintre and Ewen Costiou gave it a dig. But the peloton overhauls the two before Mikkel Honoré, Alessandro de Marchi, Jenthe Biermans, and Giulio Pellizzari jump off the front. Also, to no avail. Attacks kept flying, and Julian Alaphilippe, Filippo Fiorelli, and Valentin Paret-Peintre eventually reached the Tuscan town in first position.
The lead group expanded into a small bunch. Kaden Groves, Julian Alaphilippe, and Pelayo Sánchez broke away from this pack before Luke Plapp, Matteo Trentin, and Filippo Fiorelli rejoined them. Andrea Vendrame made it seven at the front just before the intermediate sprint.
The leaders opened up a gap of over 3 minutes before it dropped below two minutes on the first gravel sector. This inspired Plapp to head out alone. Sánchez and Alaphilippe bridged across.
Undeterred by a minor setback, Sánchez and Alaphilippe showed their resilience as they quickly regained their position, catching up with the Australian Champion on the steep slopes.
The three crested the last ramp 25 seconds ahead of the GC group. Andrea Piccolo jumped away and tried to bridge across to the front in the undulating final phase, but he didn’t succeed.
The attackers battled it out for the win. Alaphilippe opened the sprint, but he couldn’t keep up when Sánchez came charging past. The 24-year-old Spaniard took the spoils ahead of the former World Champion, while Plapp came home in third position.
The GC remained the same, with Pogacar leading by a comfortable margin.
