2024 Giro d'Italia Stage 6 Live Coverage
Welcome to our live coverage of Stage 6 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia! Our live profile and commentary are below, followed by a preview of the technical aspects of the route.
Course Preview
The riders set off from Tuscan seaside resort Viareggio to travel to the thermal springs town Rapolano Terme. The 177 kilometres long route takes in an elevation gain of 1,900 metres, while the hilly second part also features three gravel roads.
Finishing venue of last year’s 10th stage returns, but this time as a starting venue. Magnus Cort outgunned Derek Gee last year in Viareggio.
The first 80 kilometres of the route are as flat as a curling rink. Then a 4.2 kilometres climb at 5.5% leads to an elevation of 400 metres above sea level and following an undulating section a KOM sprint is scheduled at La Bertesca.
Mentioned section also opens the second hilly part of the race, while the gravel roads make an entrance in the last 50 kilometres. The first one is 4.4 kilometres long and entirely flat. It virtually ends on the second sterrato, which opens on the flat and then switches to a 2.5 kilometres gravel climb at 6.6% to Grotti Alto.
There are still almost 40 kilometres remaining when the pink caravan moves through Grotti Alto. This section features a lot of short ramps at around 5% before a false flat continues onto the last – slightly undulating – dust road of 2.4 kilometres to the semi-abandoned village of Pievina.
The route turns right onto the tarmac for a 4 kilometres descent to Asciano. After crossing the Ombrone River the riders climb out of the valley in a 700 metres effort at 4% before the route continues as an 8 kilometres false flat all the way to the line in Rapolano Terme.
The second intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds, while the first three riders on the line gain 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
