Steinhauser wins stage 17

Georg Steinhauser dropped his fellow attacker Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier on the penultimate ascent of the Passo Brocon. The 22-year-old German soloed to victory, while Tadej Pogacar finished in second to extend his lead on GC.

Nairo Quintana and Giulio Pellizzari sprinted for the KOM points at the summit of the Passo Sella and pushed on in the descent. Julian Alaphilippe and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier rejoined them, and the two reached the valley in the race lead.

Back in the valley, Georg Steinhauser, Davide Ballerini, Damiano Caruso, and Marco Frigo tracked down the four leaders, while Nicola Conci and Attila Valter extended the lead group to ten on the Passo Rolle. They opened up a two-minute lead until Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL took the reins to halve the gap.

Pellizzari took most KOM points at the Passo Rolle, while the peloton closed into 20 seconds in the valley. The attackers were caught on the early slopes of the Passo Gobbera.

Ghebreigzabhier launched a powerful attack just before the summit, pushing his physical limits. Steinhauser, not one to be left behind, responded with a burst of energy. The two cyclists pushed their bodies to the limit, widening their lead on the Passo Brocon to 2 minutes before Steinhauser bravely headed out alone with 2 kilometers to climb.

Steinhauser entered the final climb with a 45-second lead over Ghebreigzabhier, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. The Eritrean was gradually reeled in on the ascent, but the 23-year-old German, showing incredible stamina, extended his lead over the GC group to 3 minutes. The tension mounted as Ben O'Connor lost contact in the final kilometres, inspiring Daniel Felipe Martinez to accelerate and further disintegrate the GC group. In a dramatic twist, Tadej Pogacar distanced himself from the others, adding to the suspense of the race.

By then, Steinhauser’s lead was comfortable enough to secure his first victory in a Grand Tour. The pink jersey finished in second to extend his lead on GC to over 7 minutes
