Race Recap
Valentin Paret-Peintre flies to victory
Valentin Paret-Peintre dropped his fellow attacker Romain Bardet with 3 kilometres to go on the Bocca della Selva, overhauling soloist Jan Tratnik to win the 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia. Tadej Pogacar quietly stayed in the GC lead.
Quinten Hermans and Simon Clarke launched a daring attack right from the start. Despite the peloton's relentless pursuit, Alessandro De Marchi managed to bridge across after 20 kilometres of intense action.
The peloton kept chasing, and Hermans was dropped from the lead group just before the intermediate sprint – at kilometre 52.1
Eventually, a huge group—featuring Valentin Paret-Peintre, Esteban Chaves, Andrea Bagioli, Juan Pedro López, Romain Bardet, Jan Tratnik, Domenico Pozzovivo, Damiano Caruso, Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Filippo Fiorelli, Marco Frigo, and Filippo Zana—managed to distance the peloton. They rejoined the two leaders on the Campasauro climb.
After intergiro sprint, with roughly 38 kilometres to go, Tratnik attacked from the lead group. Frigo, Bagioli, Bardet, and Valentin Paret-Peintre went after him.
Tratnik entered the finish climb 35 seconds ahead of the first chasers. The second group trailed at 1.15 minutes and the peloton was over 5 minutes in arrears.
The lone attacker extended his lead to over one minute on the climb. But when Paret-Peintre and Bardet sped up and dropped Frigo and Bagioli, the gap fell again. The two Frenchmen passed the banner for the last 5 kilometres 39 seconds after the Slovenian.
In a stunning display of strength and strategy, Paret-Peintre dropped Bardet with just 3 kilometres to go. He then swiftly caught up with Tratnik a mere 300 metres later, sealing his first stage win in a grand Tour. This victory marks a significant milestone in his cycling career.
The GC riders crossed the line 3 minutes later, and Tadej Pogacar retained the maglia rosa.
