Race Recap
Jorgensen wins Dwars door Vlaanderen
At 12:15 p.m., the starting gun sounded on Stationsplein in Roeselare. The riders started a ride of about 189 km. With about 131 km to go, the early breakaway formed. The 11 riders who colored the first hours of the competition were: Pedersen (Soudal Quick-Step), Norsgaard (Movistar Team), Grondin (Arkéa – B&B Hotels), De Bondt (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team), De Pooter (Intermarché-Wanty), Märkl (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Grondahl Jansen (Team Jayco AlUla), Eenkhoorn (Lotto Dstny), Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility), Gachignard (TotalEnergies) and Vercouillie (Team Flanders Baloise).
At 66 km from the finish, there was a crash in the peloton with Van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike), Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) and Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) as the main victims. All three had to give up. Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was also involved, but the Dane was able to resume the match. That crash tore the peloton into pieces. A group was formed with Benoot & Jorgensen (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Küng (Groupama-FDJ), the duo Valgren - Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) and Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers), who started looking for the leading group.
On the climb of the Ladeuze, with about 40 km to ride, the pursuers joined the remaining front runners. This is how a group of 12 formed at the head of the race. At that moment the peloton was about a minute and a half behind. On the Huisepontweg, Küng shook the tree, which severely thinned out the leading group with 26 km to go. This left a leading group of 7: De Bondt, Benoot and Jorgensen, Bettiol, Küng, Tarling and Abrahamsen.
Former Tour of Flanders winner Bettiol shook the tree on the first climb of Nokereberg. That attack thinned the leading group to five, Benoot and Tarling had to take over the role. With 19 km to go, the instigator of the attack on Nokereberg had to step down. The Italian suffered from cramps. In the meantime, Benoot and Tarling had been able to join the front again.
After a number of shots from different riders, it was Jorgensen who made the decisive attack with 7 km to go. There was silence behind the American. In the pursuit, Abrahamsen, who was a member of the early breakaway, looked for place 2. In the end, he still had to sprint for second place, and with success. He won for Küng. Jorgensen, who wins his first classic in his career, is the first American winner of Dwars door Vlaanderen.
