2024 De Brabantse Pijl Race Preview
The details of this year's 2024 De Brabantse Pijl are falling into place. Find the latest route profiles and maps below, followed by our strategic preview of the race.
The spring cobbled classics season gives way to the Ardennes campaign, and bridging those two distinct worlds sits De Brabantse Pijl, a race that has quietly established itself as one of the most reliable indicators of form heading into Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Taking place on Wednesday the 10th of April, the race offers a demanding parcours across the Brabant Walloon hills south of Brussels that rewards the punchy climber, the kind of rider who can repeat explosive efforts on short, steep rises without the luxury of long recovery periods in between.
The course is built around a series of punishing little climbs that lack the fame of the Mur de Huy or the Cauberg but are no less brutal in isolation and considerably more taxing when strung together in succession. The Smeysberg and the Moskesstraat are among the obstacles that force repeated accelerations, and the finale brings riders back to Overijse after a circuit that leaves no room for passengers. Anyone hoping to follow the best climbers needs genuine explosive power, and anyone hoping to wait and outsprint them will find the terrain has done its work long before the line comes into view.
Tadej Pogačar arrives as the overwhelming favourite. The Slovenian is in the form of his life in 2024, having already claimed a string of impressive results in the early season, and this kind of punchy, hilly terrain suits him perfectly. His ability to attack from distance and maintain power on repeated short climbs makes him exceptionally dangerous here, and if he is present at the front on the final ascent there are very few riders in the world capable of staying with him.
Mathieu van der Poel has already shown brilliant form in the spring and though his focus has largely been on the cobbled classics, his versatility means he cannot be discounted here. The same applies to Wout van Aert, who has shown in previous editions of these Ardennes preview races that he is more than capable of competing with the pure climbers on this kind of terrain. Both men represent the crossover generation of classics rider who can genuinely compete across multiple terrains in the same week.
Among the pure climbers, Mikel Landa, Marc Hirschi, and David Gaudu are names to watch. Hirschi in particular has the punchy acceleration that this course rewards, and he has shown over the years that he can produce his best performances on exactly this kind of day. Gaudu is another rider whose profile fits the demands of the Brabantse Pijl closely, with the lightweight climbing ability to stay with the best on the final circuits.
The women's race takes place on the same day and carries equal prestige, with Demi Vollering, Lotte Kopecky, and Marianne Vos among the expected contenders in a field full of riders targeting the Ardennes as their key objectives of the spring.
The weather in early April in Belgium can be anything from mild sunshine to cold rain and crosswinds, and the conditions on the day may play a significant role in how the race unfolds. A difficult day suits the most aggressive riders and those willing to make early selections on the climbs rather than waiting for a final showdown. Expect attacks to come repeatedly throughout the decisive circuits, with the race only truly settling in the closing kilometres as the strongest survivors fight for the finish in Overijse.
