The start ramp in Glasgow awaits the finest time trialists in the world, and the women's race promises to be one of the defining moments of the 2023 road cycling season. With a challenging course winding through the Scottish city and its surroundings, the race will demand both raw power and technical precision from its competitors.

The overwhelming favourite has to be Annemiek van Vleuten, the Dutch champion who has dominated the discipline for years and arrives in Scotland with something to prove after a remarkable career that shows no signs of slowing down. Her ability to sustain enormous power output over extended efforts makes her the rider everyone else is chasing, and she will be desperate to add another world title to her palmares.

Chasing her down will be Ellen van Dijk, another Dutch powerhouse who holds the women's hour record and is among the cleanest time trialists in the peloton. Her position on the bike is exceptional and she thrives on courses that reward pure aerodynamic efficiency. A podium feels almost certain for her, and victory is absolutely within her reach if van Vleuten has any kind of off day.

The American challenge will be led by Chloe Dygert, whose comeback story has captured the imagination of the cycling world. The former world champion has rebuilt herself after serious injury and shown that she retains the extraordinary engine that made her so dominant in the discipline before her accident at the 2020 Worlds. A return to the top step would be a fairytale narrative.

Marlen Reusser and Trixi Worrack will also be among those capable of troubling the leaders, while any number of dark horses could emerge on a course that could suit slightly different skill sets depending on how conditions develop on race day.
