Course Preview
The road race at the Worlds sets off from Edinburgh and reaches its zenith on a city circuit in Glasgow. The circuit is crammed with punchy short climbs, featuring 193 metres of climbing per lap. The race totals 154.1 kilometres, while the elevation gain adds up to 2,229 metres.
The riders clip into their pedals on the shores of Loch Lomond. The lake is situated on the border between the Scottish Highlands and the lowlands of Central Scotland. It lies some 20 kilometres to the northwest of Glasgow.
It takes the riders three times as long to reach Glasgow’s city circuit. Via a northern loop, they reach the Crow Road climb, which also featured in the men’s race. The climb is 5.6 kilometres long and averaging 4%. From here, the riders descend into the Glasgow finishing circuit.
Entering Glasgow’s west end after a little over 100 kilometres, the riders complete six full laps of a 14.3 kilometres circuit. It’s very technical with punchy short climbs and plenty of turns – 42, to be precise. The Montrose Street climb stands out with 200 metres at 7.7%, but it doesn’t come in isolation. There are several similar pinches per lap.
Most important of Montrose Street is its proximity to the finish. From the top, there are just 1.5 kilometres to the line via a technical downhill run-in with five corners to negotiate. Moreover, there’s a tight chicane with 750 metres to go. Two lefthand turns before the final 400 metres are dead straight.
The women’s road race starts at in Stirling at 12:00 and is expected to finish at 15:50 – both are local times (BST).
