2023 World Championships TT Race Preview
The details of this year's 2023 World Championships TT are falling into place. Find the latest route profiles and maps below, followed by our strategic preview of the race.
The start ramp in Edinburgh awaits the world's finest time triallists as the sport's most prestigious one-day prize goes on the line. The course on offer is a demanding and largely flat 47.8 kilometre route that should suit the pure specialists while still offering enough technical challenge to reward those with tactical intelligence and superior bike handling.
Remco Evenepoel arrives as the overwhelming favourite. The Belgian has been in imperious form throughout the season and is the defending world champion in this discipline, having announced himself to a global audience in Wollongong twelve months ago. His ability to sustain extraordinary power output over extended durations makes him the rider everyone else must measure themselves against. He comes into this race fresh and motivated, and dismissing him from the top step of the podium feels almost foolish.
Filippo Ganna will want to prove a point. The Italian giant has long been considered one of the most physically gifted time triallists in the sport, and his palmares speaks for itself. He has previously worn the rainbow bands and will be desperate to reclaim them on home roads. His raw engine power is simply frightening and if he arrives in peak condition he could genuinely trouble Evenepoel.
Stefan Kung offers the Swiss precision that has made him a perennial podium threat in major time trials. He rarely disappoints at championship level and the consistency he brings means he must be considered among the medals.
Wout van Aert adds an intriguing element. Primarily celebrated for his versatility across all terrain and disciplines, he is far more than a capable time triallist and could surprise if his preparation has been fully focused on this event.
The conditions in Scotland could play a significant role given the unpredictable nature of the weather, and riders who start later may face different challenges than those who set off earlier in the day. Expect a tightly contested battle at the front of the leaderboard with Evenepoel ultimately proving too strong for his rivals.
