Course Preview
Stage 11 is the longest of the entire Giro, but not the hardest. At 219 kilometres, the riders travel from Camaiore to a likely bunch sprint in the streets of Tortona.
The route runs in a northerly direction along the shores of the Mediterranean to penetrate Liguria. Three modest ascents are on the cards.
The Passo del Bracco is crested at kilometre 80 after 10.1 kilometres of climbing at 4.4%. The riders descend into Sestri Levante to continue on the flat and to the north. After leaving the coast the road starts to rise false flat and it will continue to do so for almost 20 kilometres. The climbing gradually intensifies until the Colla di Boasi throws in 9.2 kilometres at 4.4%.
The last obstacle of the day is the Passo della Castagnola, on which the Giro leaves Liguria. The 5 kilometres climb at 4.5% is crested with 42.8 kilometres to go. The first part is on descent, while the last 30 kilometres go in a straight and flat line toward the finish in Tortona.
It will be the fourth Giro stage finish in Tortona. Fernando Gaviria was the last victor. In 2017, the Colombian outgunned Sam Bennett and Jasper Stuyven. Winning four stages, that Giro was the highlight of Gaviria’s career.
