2023 Giro d'Italia Stage 1 Live Coverage

Course Preview
The Giro d'Italia kicks into gear with an ITT of 19.6 kilometres long. Flat course with a punchy finish.
The route runs almost entirely on a Via Verde along the Adriatic Sea, which is an old railway line that has been recovered and repurposed as a cycle track. It’s part of the Ciclovia Adriatica, a track that begins in Trieste and runs along the Adriatic coast to finish in the deep south of Italy in Puglia. It totals more than 1,300 kilometres.
Via Verdes are essentially flat, as is the route of the ITT on the Giro’s first day of action. The riders race along the coast from Fossacesia Marina to Ortona and leave the track for a punchy finish. A 1.2 kilometres climb at 5.3% leads into the town, which is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, before the last 1.7 kilometres are a false flat. The first part goes down, the second part up.
There are two intermediate time checks along the way – at kilometre 9.8 and at kilometre 16.8.
Last year’s Giro took in a similar time trial on the second day, although it was about half as short. Simon Yates took the spoils ahead of Mathieu van der Poel and Tom Dumoulin.
