Race Recap

What a day in the hills of Limburg. The 2023 edition of Amstel Gold Race delivered everything fans of classic cycling could possibly want, with attacks, tactical racing, and a thrilling finish that came down to just a handful of riders.

Mathieu van der Poel put in a dominant performance to claim victory on home soil, delighting the Dutch crowd that lined every climb and descent throughout the day. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider showed the kind of strength and class that has made him one of the most exciting riders in the peloton, timing his effort to perfection in the closing kilometers.

The race unfolded over a relentless series of short, punchy climbs that characterize this part of the Netherlands, with the Cauberg and Bemelerberg among the obstacles that gradually wore down the peloton. Teams pushed hard throughout the final hour, looking to thin out the group and set up their leaders for a shot at the win.

Several riders made attempts to get clear late in the race, but it was van der Poel who had the legs when it mattered most. He proved impossible to follow when he accelerated, leaving his rivals unable to respond with any real conviction.

Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogacar were among those in contention deep into the race, making for a breathtaking finale featuring three of the biggest names in the sport. In the end though, van der Poel had just a little bit more, crossing the line to take a memorable victory in front of an adoring home crowd.
