The hills of Dutch Limburg provide the backdrop for one of the most beloved classics on the cycling calendar, and the 2023 edition of Amstel Gold Race promises to deliver another spectacular day of racing across the undulating terrain that has made this event so unique among the spring monuments.

The race covers a demanding route through the rolling landscape around Maastricht and Valkenburg, with riders facing a relentless series of short but punishing climbs. Unlike the cobbled brutality of Flanders or the long grinding ascents of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Amstel rewards a particular kind of versatility, a rider who can punch over the climbs repeatedly without ever truly getting a chance to recover. The Cauberg, the Geulhemmerberg, and the fearsome Wijnpers and Gulperberg all feature on a route that demands constant attention and tactical intelligence.

Mathieu van der Poel arrives as a hometown hero of sorts, carrying enormous expectations on his broad shoulders. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider has unfinished business with this race and will be motivated to put on a show in front of a passionate Dutch crowd. His explosive power on short climbs makes him a constant danger, and any group that allows him to reach the finale with fresh legs does so at its peril.

Tadej Pogačar has demonstrated a voracious appetite for classics success and cannot be discounted, while Tom Pidcock and Wout van Aert add further depth to what shapes up as an extraordinarily competitive startlist. The women's race, run concurrently, features Demi Vollering and Annemiek van Vleuten among the favourites and could prove equally dramatic.
