The time trial world championship in Wollongong promises to be one of the most hotly contested in recent memory, with a course that should suit the pure specialists while also giving hope to the more powerful all-rounders.

The parcours rolls out from Wollongong itself and takes riders through a largely flat to undulating opening section before the real challenge emerges. The climb of Mount Pleasant looms as the decisive feature of the day, a testing ascent that will punish anyone who has gone too deep in the earlier kilometres. The descent that follows demands technical confidence and bravery, and then riders must produce a final effort back toward the finish line with tired legs. It is a course that rewards complete riders, those who can time trial on the flat, climb under the clock, and descend at speed.

Defending champion Filippo Ganna of Italy arrives as the man to beat. The powerful Ineos Grenadiers rider is perhaps the finest time trialist of his generation on flat and power courses, but the climbing element here introduces genuine uncertainty around whether he can retain his title. His raw wattage is extraordinary but the mountain may expose small vulnerabilities.

Remco Evenepoel comes in on the back of a stunning Vuelta a España victory and carries enormous confidence. The Belgian has shown he is a formidable force against the clock and his climbing ability means the course suits him well. Many will consider him the favourite.

Stefan Küng, Rohan Dennis, and Wout van Aert will all be dangerous, each capable of producing the performance of their lives on the right day.
