Race Recap
In the third stage of the Volta ao Algarve 2022 the fastest is Fabio Jakobsen. Fourth victory of the season for the Quick Step - Alpha Vinyl rider who demonstrates an important superiority over his opponents. Great sprint also that of Tim Merlier (Alpecin - Fenix), second, and of Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) who pays for having gone out too soon. A clear sprint that of the Dutchman, who finalized an excellent work of his team, who protected him and then launched perfectly in the last 200 meters. Also noteworthy is the eighth place of Michele Gazzoli (Astana Qazaqstan), first Italian on arrival. After a dozen kilometers are Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Rafael Silva (Efapel Cycling), Rafael Lourenço (Atum general - Tavira - Maria Nova Hotel), Nicolas Saenz (Tavfer-Mortágua-Ovos Matinados), Afonso Silva (Kelly - Simoldes - UDO), Afonso Eulálio (Glassdrive Q8 Anicolor) and Samuel Caldeira (W52 - FC Porto) to find the right moment after previous attempts were quickly reabsorbed. This time, however, quickly the group, also marked by a fall that involved many teams leading to the retirement of Luis-Joe Luhrs (Bora-hansgrohe), gets up and lets go. In the absence of dangerous riders in terms of the general classification, Groupama - FDJ does not bother to contain the gap, allowing the seven forwards to manage the effort, while managing to accumulate an advantage. Thanks also to the constantly descending path, the pace remains quite high, with the first hour of running that sees the fugitives travel 42.9 kilometers. Their advantage continues to grow for a few more kilometers, reaching a maximum of 6'50 ".
At that point the French team decides that it is better to get in control, recovering a minute and keeping them at that distance until halfway through the race. Entering the final 100 kilometers, the gap is therefore 5'50 ", but in the following kilometers, with the collaboration of two men from Alpecin-Fenix and one from Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, the group quickly approaches the pacemakers, taking to 2'35 "to -75 from the conclusion. Approaching too much and too early, the pursuers slow down slightly along the first GPM of the day, the ascent of Pisa Barro, at the top of which they pass with 3'05" of delay. indicates 40 kilometers at the end, however, the platoon accelerates again and, in a short time, manages to recover a large part of the disadvantage, taking to 45 ". In front, in the meantime, Saenz loses contact, who is soon reinstated. orbit by the group pulled by Alpecin-Fenix, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, Cofidis and Tavfer-Mortágua-Ovos Matinados, whose work allows you to reach the foot of the second and last ascent, that of Bengado, with only 15 "delay. The first ramps of the ascent saw Lourenço, Caldeira and Rafael Silva break away from the other fugitives and be caught by their pursuers, a fate that soon after also touched Eulálio, Afonso Silva and Juaristi. Immediately before the GPM, however, Hugo Nunes (RPB), Fábio Costa (GCT) and again Eulálio accelerate, managing to take a maximum of 20 "of margin before being reabsorbed 10 kilometers from the finish. the maneuvers of the sprinter teams; Human Powered Health, Ineos Grenadiers, Cofidis and Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl alternated at the head of the group, with the latter's riders taking control of the situation in the last 2000 meters. First Remco Evenepoel and then Kasper Asgreen prepare the ground for Fabio Jakobsen, who perfectly completes the work of his teammates. He has to settle for second place Tim Merlier (Alpecin - Fenix) who was unable to get out of the wheel of the Dutchman while Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), third on arrival, paid the headwind and could not stand head to head with the 23 year old.
