These fifteen men immediately gained ground against the group, in which Bahrain-Victorious has no interest in pulling and mending, with the risk of allowing Romain Bardet (DSM), second in the general classification, to win bonuses in the final. Logan McLain (KTM Tirol Cycling) and above all Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost), who are reabsorbed with the passing of kilometers, are not able to return. of the others and take away a small group, including Amador, Arrieta, Kämna and Træen. These six immediately go over the top with a good margin and continue their action. The Pinot and De La Cruz pass turns out to be better and the two go away alone in the uphill stretch, towards Bichl, not valid as a GPM. The most immediate pursuers stay less than a minute and gain in descent, while the other attackers of the day finish further and further away. The group, on the other hand, lost more than 10 'and soon gave up fighting for the stage victory. In the descent that follows the Spaniard manages to get out of the way of the Frenchman, who however returns to the flat stretch of road that leads to the last climb of this Tour of the Alps.
At the foot of the last roughness of the day, Pinot has a mechanical problem who tries to solve by leaning against the car, while De la Curz decides not to attack and wait for his rival. On the challenging slopes of the Stronach the first to attack is the Iberian, but then it is the transalpine who makes the difference. The standard bearer of the Groupama - FDJ, in fact, manages to overtake his rival just over a kilometer from the top. De la Cruz, however, does not give up, climbing the hill just 18 "behind the Frenchman. In the descent the man from Astana manages to catch up and the two appear together with the sign of minus 3 at the conclusion. taken in front by the men of Team DSM and Ineos Grenadiers who begin to force the pace. Halfway through the climb Bilbao loses contact from the first part of the group: Bardet immediately understands what is happening, immediately starting to force the pace. he remains team mate Arensman and Storer, while the others lose contact little by little; the three crest the GPM with an advantage of 23 "over the group from Bilbao.
: the two collaborated until the entrance in the last kilometer, to then begin a study phase. At first the lead was taken by Pinot, then flanked and overtaken by de la Cruz just in view of the last corner. It is at this point that the Frenchman launched his sprint, to which the Spaniard was unable to respond, allowing the Frenchman to celebrate his return to victory. Meanwhile Bardet, Arensman and Storer continue their attack: the three will arrive at the finish with a 38 "advantage over their rivals. This allows the Frenchman to go and snatch the leader's jersey in Bilbao.
