Race Recap

At the start, almost all the interviewees predict the arrival of a breakaway and the feeling is confirmed with the group leaving immediately at a very high pace, shaken by continuous shots from the early stages of the race. After a dozen kilometers leading are David De La Cruz (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën Team) Patrick Gamper (BORA Hansgrohe), Vinicius Rangel Costa (Movistar Team), Omar El Gouzi (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè ), Luca Rastelli (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè), Simone Ravanelli (Drone Hopper - Androni Giocattoli), Erik Fetter (Eolo-Kometa), Igor Arrieta (Equipo Kern Pharma), Iker Ballarin (Euskaltel - Euskadi) Felix Engelhardt (Tirol KTM Cycling Team), who manage to gain about twenty seconds, then thirty, forty, fifty, up to sixty. But once you've completed a full lap the clock must turn back, with Israel - Premier Tech and Bahrain - Victorious picking up the pace. At the foot of the first climb of the day, the gap is thus 55 seconds, while at the top, despite new shots to try to resist, the gap is reduced to a few meters, which are filled as soon as it reaches the top, thanks also to the intervention of Movistar The descent thus starts at full speed, with a strong nervousness that causes the fall of many runners, including Pello Bilbao and Romain Bardet, who fortunately do not seem to have important consequences, unlike Clément Berthet, who was immediately forced to retire. Once everyone has returned, the group remains compact until it passes the first half of the race, when a new group of forwards stretches decisively, taking advantage of a counter-slope. Thus leading Sebastián Henao (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Fabio Felline (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Andrey Amador (INEOS Grenadiers), Ben Swift (INEOS Grenadiers), Merhawi Kudus (EF Education-Easypost), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama - FDJ ), Omer Goldstein (Israel - Premier Tech), Abner González (Movistar Team), Igor Arrieta (Equipo Kern Pharma), Natnael Tesfazion (Drone Hopper - Androni Giocattoli), Unai Cuadrado (Euskaltel - Euskadi) and Jonathan Caicedo (EF Education- Easypost), joined by Matteo Fabbro (BORA Hansgrohe) and Anton Palzer (BORA Hansgrohe), who do not want to miss the opportunity, as well as Nicolas Prodhomme (AG2R Citroën Team), who in turn manages to return. , with many teams represented and no danger to the general, the group let it go, quickly conceding almost two minutes of advantage. During the climb the gap drops to 1'30 "at the GPM, but in the following section there is less control and the fugitives gain up to 2'18", which will nevertheless be the maximum advantage. The fugitives continue in good agreement up to 15 kilometers from the finish, with the climb now imminent and the clear possibility of fighting for the stage success. The group thus begins to recover ground, starting the final climb with a delay of 1'40 "from Goldstein, first to attack with decision. Caicedo, Tesfazion, Arrieta and Pinot are brought back to him, with the latter trying to relaunch entering the final ten kilometers. Goldstein holds up a few hundred meters to the Frenchman's wheel, but must soon raise the white flag and let him start. even their own runners on the run in the most pedaled part of the climb. The gap thus falls below one minute with respect to the pacemaker, which presents itself at the last five kilometers with an advantage over the group in pursuit of it, the riders in the middle, now reduced to thirty, are caught seconds. When the road starts to rise again it is Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Qazaqstan) who attacks from the group, without immediate reactions. Shortly afterwards Pavel also tries Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers), but the French rider is immediately punished by Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) in the service of Pello Bilbao. The subsequent slowdown allows Lopez to return to earning after being almost caught up, dangerously approaching a Pinot that now rises more in heart than in legs. The Frenchman seems to be able to resist keeping the Colombian away in the slightly flat stretch, but when the road starts to rise again for the last 1500 meters it is immediately clear that the small gap left will disappear quickly. his action immediately, as soon as he returns to the transalpine. For his part, Pinot tries to react, but the rival's progression is too much for him and after sitting down, he lowers his head in surrender. The last kilometer is thus a catwalk for Miguel Angel Lopez, who conquers a beautiful stage in front of the brave Pinot, exhausted, frustrated and in tears after the finish line due to the lack of success. Behind them the group arrives with Bardet who wins the sprint against Bilbao, recovering four seconds thanks to the bonuses.
