Race Recap

Unsurprisingly, the start is immediately very fast, with numerous attacks following one another in a first phase of running in constant descent. First to be able to gain a small interesting margin are Benoit Cosnefroy (Ag2r Citroën Team), Marco Haller (Bora - Hansgrohe), Davide Bais (Eolo-Kometa Cycling Team) and Alexander Konychev (Team BikeExchange - Jayco), who after twenty kilometers of race manage to gain 45 seconds. Since there are no dangerous men for the general, UAE Team Emirates does not chase, but Trek - Segafredo and Israel - Premier Tech think about changing the inertia. The situation moves again as a result of new attacks, with Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) also trying to move. But the rainbow jersey is also present in the following attempt, with a quintet returning to the leaders, now almost reached by the group. Alaphilippe also includes Marco Haller (Bora - Hansgrohe), Alex Aranburu (Movistar Team), Luis Mas (Movistar Team), Mikkel Honoré (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) and Quinn Simmons (Trek - Segafredo), who does not want to leave a Bais the chance to overtake him in the GPM ranking. With the return of these men, the escape finds impetus, managing to distance again the group, which was now just ten seconds away, also rejecting the attempt to return by Lawson Craddock (Team BikeExchange - Jayco). group rises to quickly reach four minutes, a gap that brings the UAE Team Emirates men in front, followed later by runners from Bahrain - Victorious. From that moment the situation remains pending, with the group managing itself in the uphill sections to get closer to the plains. A goal that is less successful going up towards Urbino, where the advantage of the attackers touches a maximum that goes to almost five minutes, but already in the following descent comes the change of pace of the group, which in the valley leading to Carpegna tries to get as close as possible possible for the attackers.

In the road leading to the first passage over the finish line, the escape begins to split due to the road that is already climbing: in front of them are soon only Mas, Aranburu, Alaphilippe, Simmons and Cosnefroy, while the group is getting closer and closer. When passing Carpegna, the five fugitives now have an advantage of less than two minutes. all the escape companions who one after the other are taken back by the group of favorites, from which Diego Rosa (Eolo - Kometa) tries to escape; the action of the Piedmontese will however have a very short duration. This first ascent immediately remains indigestible to many runners as was to be expected, but among those who lose contact there is also the name that you do not expect: Evenepoel soon goes into difficulty, followed shortly after by Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers). of the brow, he leads the Caruso group, which tries to force the pace even downhill, risking to end up off the road in one of the many technical curves of this descent. The group of the best is thus divided further and before the new passage from Carpegna goes to catch Simmons who had passed the GPM with just 20 "of margin. At this point the Bahrain Victorious tries to assert the numerical superiority by sending Pello Bilbao to the attack The first to break the delay when the road starts to rise again is Landa, who takes Pogacar, Vingegaard and Enric Mas (Movistar) with him. Richie Porte (Ineos Grenadiers) tries alone to get back to the leading quartet, while behind him a trio forms with Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and our Caruso. 'extension of Tadej Pogacar, which immediately turns out to be the decisive one: behind him, in fact, no one can follow him, with Landa and Vingegaard who start to argue, facilitating even more the m blue aglia who certainly didn't need their help. The Australian is thus able to return to the group of pursuers. Hindley, Pinot and Caruso. Downhill the Slovenian does not run any particular risks, while the chasing group splits into several sections: Mas falls to the ground, while Porte loses contact shortly after, risking also to end up too long in a curve. The Slovenian is thus all alone at the finish line, going to take another great victory in his young career.
