Race Recap
Caleb Ewan wins the sprint in the third stage of the Tirreno - Adriatico 2022. The Lotto Soudal captain clearly wins the sprint in Terni, managing the best times to catch Arnaud Démare, who started too long. The Frenchman thus closes the stage in second position, keeping behind a brilliant Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma), able to get behind Nacer Bouhanni (Arkéa-Samsic) and yesterday's winner Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix). In the following positions, the blues Simone Consonni (Cofidis), Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers) and Matteo Moschetti (Trek-Segafredo) close the top ten, while the general classification does not change. Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) therefore retains the leader's jersey in front of Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), author of a surprising action in the final together with Julian Alaphilippe, Marc Soler and Tao Geoghegan Hart , born after the sprint to the flying finish line. Shortly after the start are Mirco Maestri, Davide Bais (Eolo - Kometa) Luca Rastelli (Bardiani - CSF - Faizané), Edoardo Zardini, Mattia Bais (Drone Hopper - Androni Giocttoli) and Taco Van Der Hoorn (Intermarché-WantyGobert) ). The six forwards quickly accumulated an advantage of more than six minutes, forcing Team BikeExchange - Jayco and Alpecin - Fenix to start leading the group after just over twenty kilometers to try to reduce the gap. At kilometer 30, the fugitives had a margin of 3'42 "left, with the group that will no longer grant much margin, always keeping them under close observation. At the top of the only GPM of the day, where Bais takes the lead before letting himself slip out and to be reabsorbed by the group, the margin drops further to 3'12 ", then continuing to decrease also in the subsequent phases.
In the central phases of the stage the group plays with the forwards, always keeping them around 90-120 seconds. When everything seems to be laid out according to a usual canvas in the flat stages, it is the UAE Team Emirates to come up with something. In fact, Tadej Pogacar's line-up accelerates with 50 kilometers from the end, anticipating the times to go and retake the five remaining attackers, then keeping a high pace that they raise further in view of the flying finish line. Only Julian Alaphilippe can resist Marc Soler's acceleration in favor of the Slovenian, with the three gaining an interesting margin over the group. First to understand the potential of this action is Mikel Landa, who tries to hold on in the snatch, followed by Tao Geoghegan Hart. Contrary to the Basque, the Briton manages to relaunch and get back on the pacemakers when they count a lead of 28 seconds over the rest of the group, which however begins to organize.
Thanks above all to the work of Lotto Soudal, the margin of the surprising leading quartet begins to drop , up to zero just before entering the last ten kilometers. At that point the formations of the sprinters in the lead alternate, with the Ineos Grenadiers playing the wildcard Filippo Ganna entering the final five kilometers. A whip that greatly lengthens the group, which is followed by the action of the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl men, including the world champion on the front line again. At the last kilometer they are still in the lead, but in the end it is Adrien Petit (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) and Jacopo Guarnieri (Groupama-FDJ) who find themselves in front, with the Italian throwing his captain. Arnaud Démare thus sprints 200 meters from the finish, trying a sprint of his own, but the cobblestones and slight inclines are fatal and is reassembled by Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal), perfect in managing times and movements.
