Tim Merlier takes the first stage in the line of the Tirreno - Adriatico 2022. The Alpecin - Fenix sprinter has crowned the great work of his teammates who have launched him perfectly and has clearly imposed himself on the finish line of Sovicille in front of Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma). Third place for Kaden Groves (Team BikeExchange-Jayco) who precedes Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies). Five Italians in the top 10 with Simone Consonni (Cofidis) fifth, while Davide Ballerini (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel-Premier Tech), Jacopo Guarnieri (Groupama-FDJ) and Andrea Vendrame (Ag2r Citroen) are classified starting from seventh place. Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) remains the leader in the general classification. It should be noted that Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) earned a second bonus on the flying finish line over all the other rivals for the final victory. Vargas (Bardiani CSF Faizanè), Davide Gabburo (Bardiani CSF Faizanè), Umberto Marengo (Drone Hopper - Androni Giocattoli), Davide Bais (Eolo-Kometa Cycling Team) and Francesco Gavazzi (Eolo-Kometa Cycling Team) who is immediately good at the rest of the group. The five are in fact let go, managing to gain a maximum advantage of 8'08 ”in the first hour of racing, with Lotto Soudal and Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl not long in getting the race under control. The delay of the group thus stabilizes for a long time around five minutes, with a first acceleration that arrives only towards halfway, when the road begins to climb in Val Cecina.

With the intervention of Ineos Grenadiers and Intermarché - Wanty Gobert, the gap drops to four minutes, continuing to go down to the approach of the only GPM of the day, where the leading group explodes. Only Bais quickly remained in command, initially followed by Cañaveral, with the Italian who thus went on to win the GPM to wear the first jersey of the climbers. After the brow, Bais is reached by Gavazzi, with Marengo and Gabburo behind them, while Cañaveral has no more and is quickly taken up by the group, only 2'37 "away at the GPM.

Marengo also gets up shortly due to a mechanical problem : unable to return to Gabburo, in fact, he allows himself to be reabsorbed. Shortly after, the same fate for Gabburo. In the meantime, Mark Cavendish (Quick-Step Alpha Vinily) loses contact on the climb that leads to the flying finish line in Chiusdino: he will then be able to re-enter in the following kilometers taking advantage of the descent and slowdown of the group. In the meantime the two Aeolus - Kometa work together and pass the Flying Finish Line with half a minute on the group. Behind the sprint Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) to make third and take a second bonus, succeeding. them and soon remaining all alone in command of the race: at first even Anthony Perez (Team Cofidis) had tried to follow the Spaniard, but without succeeding. The standard bearer of the UAE Team Emirates initially gained ground, until the men of the Groupama - FDJ lead the group, when by now the margin exceeds 30 ″; advantage that remains unchanged at the entrance in the last ten kilometers.

At this point the men of Lotto Soudal and Bahrain Victorious arrive at the head of the group, followed by the riders from Israel - PremierTech. In view of the last 3 kilometers the men of Team TotalEnergies also arrive in front, with Daniel Oss and Edvald Boasson Hagen, who try to throw Peter Sagan; in the meantime, a new acceleration puts an end to Soler's action. At this point the men of the Alpecin - Fenix also appear in front, but at the entrance in the last kilometer it is the teammates of Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel - PremierTech) who work, before being overtaken by the men of the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.

Peter Sagan is the first to launch the sprint, but Merlier has already placed himself at his wheel who is very skilled at jumping the three-time world champion. The final sprint is without history, with the Belgian who can also afford to turn around to check what is happening behind him, where Groves and Kooij try to get back on him, but their effort will only be valid for second place.
