Race Recap
Roglič wins queen stage
Primož Roglič (TJV) proved who was in top form today on the queen stage of the Paris Nice by showing his rivals a clean pair of heels today on mountaintop finish of Col de Turini. The Slovenian phenom launched his winning move in the closing metres and none of the GC favorites could respond after 191km of racing. Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) put in a great ride for second, and Simon Yates took third.
"It’s nice to win on a long climb like this, in front of my biggest supporter [his son Lev]," Roglic said after the stage. "Together we have the best time on the podium when we do the telemark. I want to practise more with him! It was a hard stage with a high pace from the the very start. It went fast, but it was good, and in the end I had the legs to follow the attacks and to win, so it was a great day. We pushed each other to the limit and it came down to the sprint itself and I still had the kick to go for it. You put a lot of sacrifice, you train, and it’s always something special when I have the possibility to be the best. I know the final stage is always the hardest. We remember last year and we know we’ll have to be very focused. It won’t be big tactics, but it will be full gas from the start. It’s a new side for the Col d’Èze and you have to worry when you have such a hard kilometre, but I hope it will be fine when I get there."
Roglic has extended his lead in the yellow jersey competition by 47 seconds ahead of Simon Philip Yates (BEX). Daniel Felipe Martinez Poveda (IGD) has moved up into third place a minute behind. Wout Van Aert (TJV) is still leading the sprint competition, and Valentin Madouas (GFC) is first in the mountains classiciation. Joao Almeida (UAD) put in a fantastic ride today to take over the best young rider jersey.
"It was fast all day, but it was a small bunch, so it didn’t really matter if I was riding in the front positions or behind," Almeida said. "Then, I managed a good effort on the final climb and I ended up in the front. It was a complicated start of the race but I’m happy to come back and to take the jersey is something nice. I’ll be happy if we keep things like that tomorrow. And no crashes!"\n
