The 2022 edition of Milano-Torino arrives as one of the season's final major one-day opportunities, slotting into the busy autumn calendar that also features Il Lombardia just days later. The race, which holds the distinction of being the oldest cycling race in the world still in existence, has found renewed prestige in recent years after being elevated back to WorldTour status, and this year's edition promises to deliver another compelling battle on the roads between the two great northern Italian cities.

The route will once again feature the iconic climb to the Superga basilica on the outskirts of Turin, that steep and punishing ascent that has become the defining feature of the modern race. The climb is not exceptionally long but its gradients are severe enough to shatter any peloton that has survived intact until that point, rewarding the pure climbers and the most explosive puncheurs while making life extremely difficult for those who rely on the protection of a group to stay in contention.

The race comes at a point in the season when form and fatigue are delicate factors. Many of the sport's biggest names will have one eye on Lombardia and may choose to use this race as preparation, which historically has produced some unexpected and exciting results as domestiques and lesser-heralded riders seize their moment.

Tadej Pogacar looms large over any race he enters at this time of year, having demonstrated an almost supernatural capacity to perform at the highest level throughout the entire season. His rivals will need to be aggressive and tactical if they hope to prevent him from adding another prestigious victory to his already remarkable palmares.
