Race Recap
Ciccone wins stage 15
Giulio Ciccone (Trek - Segafredo) put three years of frustration to bed after winning the first alpine stage of the Giro d'Italia solo in Cogne. The 22-year-old attacked on the final climb with 20km to go leaving Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) and Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost) in his wake. Carthy eventually faded to fourth place as Antonio Pedrero (Movistar) moved into third on the day, 2'19 back on the winner.
“The steep part of the climb was at the beginning,” Ciccone said, explaining his decision to attack when he did. "In my mind, I say, ‘If I go alone here, I can arrive, otherwise in a sprint with two or three riders you never know what can happen.’ I tried everything today because my legs were really good. Last year I think I was in good shape, but a bit unlucky in the Giro and a bit unlucky in the Vuelta. There were so many problems, with COVID.”
Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) arrived safely in the GC group around six minutes back and carries the maglia rosa into the rest day with a seven-second lead over Jai Hindley (Bora - Hansgrohe).
