Race Recap
Jakobsen wins stage 16
Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-QuickStep) wished himself a happy birthday after sprinting to victory in Santa Cruz de Bezana. The 25-year-old beat out Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) for the win. Michael Matthews (BikeExchange) was fourth.
"A birthday is always a good day, but I'm over the moon with this win," Jakobsen said. ""I think what we saw today is the 'Wolf pack'. I was dropped on the climb, the guys waited for me, they brought me back and I won the race. The only thing I can do is win a short, fast sprint – they did everything else today."\nOdd Christian Eiking (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) had a quiet day to retain the leader's jersey for another day. He sits 54 seconds ahead of Cofidis' Guillaume Martin heading into a difficult mountain stage tomorrow.
"Tactically speaking, it was maybe my easiest day in the red jersey but in another way it was hard to restart after the rest day. I felt okay but sleepy all day. In the end, it wasn't difficult to defend the red jersey today. Tomorrow the Lagos de Covadonga will be very decisive for the GC. It will be a really hard racing from the start. It will be a lot of fun to race up there."\n
