Pogacar wins time trial

It only took five days for Tadej Pogacar (UAD) to stamp his authority on this year's Tour de France. The defending champion stormed to victory in the 27.4km time trial, crushing European TT champion Stefan KĂĽng's (GFC) time by 18 seconds. Jonas Vingegaard (TJV) was third after a great ride, 27 seconds of the pace.

"Today was a really good day for me," Pogacar said. "I didn’t make any mistakes. It was perfect weather for me. Some guys hate wet roads, luckily I had the perfect conditions. In recent time trials I didn’t do so well because I started super fast. This time I started pacing myself pretty well and found the perfect rhythm until the end. The goal was not to lose time. I’m super happy. Maybe it’s better not to take the yellow jersey. I would have loved to have the yellow jersey. But the white looks good too."

Mathieu Van Der Poel (AFC) stays in yellow by eight seconds ahead of Pogacar, who sits in second now. Wout Van Aert is third overall, 30 seconds back.

"I surprised myself today," said van der Poel, who finished in fifth, 31 seconds behind Pogacar's time. "I have to thank the team. We worked until midnight to get the best position on the bike. It was one of my best days on the bike. I was able to push myself beyond my limits today and I’m proud of what I did. I saved some energy to really force myself toward the end. I need to keep something in the tank. When I said yesterday I would lose the jersey, it was not a lie."
