Bernal climbs into leaders jersey

Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) decided today was the day, atop Campo Felice, to show his GC rivals he was the one to beat at the Giro d'Italia. The Colombian left all doubts as to his form at the bottom of Campo Felice as he springboarded out of the group of GC favorites to pass Geoffrey Bouchard (Ag2r Citroën Team) and Koen Bouwman (Jumbo-Visma), part of the original breakaway, on his way into the pink jersey.

"I cannnot believe what is happening. I just won my first stage in a Grand Tour. I made a lot of sacrifices to be in this position after the Tour last year. I’m really happy. I was really thinking to do well today but I was not sure to go for the stage. It was more because of my team-mates – they had a lot of confidence in me. I was not sure but they told me: ‘you can do it, we will take the responsibility for you and what happens, happens.’ This victory is more for them because they really believed in me."

Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) and Alexander Vlasov (Astana-Premier Tech) were second and third respectively at seven seconds after one of the hardest days of the Giro thus far.

Remo Evenepoel (Deceuninck-QuickStep) came in a further three seconds later in fourth to retain his second-place position on GC.

“The start of the day was very hard, but the toughest moment of the day came on the white gravel roads. I was in a good position in the tunnel, when a teammate of Bernal almost touched his wheel and because of that I lost some places. It’s racing and it happens, but the good thing is that I could gain a couple of positions by the time I arrived at the finish, where I just missed out on the bonus seconds. Fortunately, I didn’t concede that much time, which is good ahead of next week. We can be proud of our work and of how the team rode today”
