Race Recap
Wout van Aert wins Amstel Gold Race
It took a photo finish to determine that Wout van Aert won the Amstel Gold Race today in Limberg. The Jumbo Visma rider outsprinted Thomas Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) by a whisper - 4/1000th of a second after breaking away with the Brit and Maximilian Schachmann (BORA - Hansgrohe) in the last 15 kilometres.
“It was super tight because after the finish I didn’t know, actually,” Van Aert said afterwards. “A few moments later they said on the radio that I won, but another few moments later I saw some images on the big screen so then I was in doubt again. It took until the jury came into the changing room and said it was sure. It was just super tight. I never had something like this before.”
Pidcock was disappointed with the outcome but said the photo finish was something you can't argue with.
"Wout thought he won and I always thought that I was second, so at least I didn’t think I won. It would have been nice to have been first but I’m still happy with second. I did a good ride. You can’t disagree with a photo finish. It’s disappointing but I did a good race and I’m happy with how it went. I’m not annoyed with how it went but to lose by so little is frustrating. We had a super good team today and they rode a super good race. It’s nice being in a team that’s so committed.”
