Alaphilippe finds the rainbow and gold in Imola
Julian Alaphilippe gave the French their first win at worlds since Laurent Bouchard in 1997 after an attack on the final lap of the 28.8km circuit in Imola, Italy. The Frenchman won by 15 seconds ahead of a small group of favorites, which saw Wout Van Aert (Belgium) take second and Marc Hirschi (Switzerland) third after 258km of racing.
"For this moment it’s really hard to say something," Alaphilippe said to reporters after the race. "I want to say thank you to all my teammates who really believe in me today. Everybody did a great job. It was a dream of my career. Sometimes, I was so close, and I was never on the podium. I came here with a lot of ambition and it’s just a dream day for me."\nThe short, but incredibly steep, Cima Gallisterna was the decision-maker on the ninth and final lap of the race, when Alaphilippe springboarded off Mikel Kwiatkowski’s attack. Only Van Aert, Kwiatkowski, Hirschi, Primoz Roglič, Jakob Fuglsang were strong enough to chase the French rider, and all the other contenders were left in the wake.
Alaphillippe took advantage of some disorganization behind, and, despite Van Aert doing two huge pulls at the front, the chasers couldn’t pull Alaphillippe back. With three kilometres to go, relented, and prepared to sprint for two remaining podium placings.
