Race Recap
Roglic wins atop Alto de Moncalvillo
Defending champion Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) put the fight to Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) today at the Vuelta a Espana, winning the 8th stage and crawling back up on GC, to second place. Dan Martin (Israel Start Up Nation) took third on the day, and sits third overall, 28 seconds back.
"The pace took off after the penultimate climb”, Roglic said. “I only knew the final climb from the roadbook and it turned out to be a tough climb. I had good legs and you should take every chance to win. In addition, I took important seconds on my opponents, but in the first place, it is great to win here. The next two stages are relatively flat. The weekend ahead will also be tough. We look at it from day to day and we try to stay focused.”
Roglic is now 13 seconds behind Carapaz after attacking on the slopes on the Cat. 1 Alto de Moncalvillo in the finale of the 164 km stage.
“It was a very animated stage and we’ve seen a strong performance from Roglic, but we’re still in the fight," Carapaz said. "The truth is this duel has been quite nice and it motivates me because it makes it more for an exciting race, mostly for the fans but also for us with the level we’re riding at. It seems like we have a couple of easier days ahead of us but we’re racing and we don’t know what’s coming.”\n
