Race Recap
Martin wins stage 3 of the Vuelta
Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) won stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana after a punchy 166km stage from Lodosa to La Laguna Negra-Vinuesa. The Irish rider moved ahead of overall leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Giro winner Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) in the final meters to take the second Vuelta victory of his career.
“It was a tough day to start a grand tour, and you can see that with the gaps in the finish," Martin said. "The team did a great job of protecting me all day, and I had perfect legs. There was a pretty strong headwind on the last climb, so it was a game of cat and mouse. Primoz was just too strong in the end when he attacked, but I’m happy to be in the fight, and I hope the good legs stay with me so we can fight for a stage in the next days.”
Martin currently sits second on GC, four seconds back on race leader Primož Roglic (TJV). Richard Carapaz (IGD) is third at 13 seconds.
“It was a great day for us”, the Slovenian said. “The team once again did a fantastic job keeping me out of trouble during the stage. Besides the rain, there was also a lot of wind. That made for a rather difficult day. It was a tough, fast final climb with a lot of attacks at the end. I came very close to Martin, but he was a bit stronger today.”\n
