Race Recap
Porte wins the Santos Tour Down Under
With six wins under his belt on Willunga, Richie Porte had another stellar performance on the famed climb today on the final stage of the Tour Down Under. However, a stage win eluded the Tasmanian after neo-pro Matthew Holmes edged by him in the closing metres after 151.5km of racing. Porte still easily took the overall of the 22nd edition of the Tour Down Under for his Trek Segafredo team, who worked all day to keep him within sights of a victory.
“It was a little bit of panic stations in the middle of the stage. We had to do the ride for the whole day. We had a little help from AG2R. I understand why Mitchelton Scott played that tactic and credit to them because they’ve been awesome all week. I think my team today was absolutely fantastic.”
“It’s been an incredible week,” Porte said. “People are quick to single out Mads Petersen because he’s the world champ and he’s here helping me, but everyone’s been incredible. They all played their part, and today, everyone’s fantastic.”
Spending most of the day in a 26 man breakaway, Holmes never considered a stage win, until everything fell into place on the final time up Willunga. When Porte attacked and started picking of the remainder of the breakaway, the young British rider snapped onto his wheel and managed to come by the seasoned pro when it counted.
“I didn’t really think about the gap, I just thought about the group I was with. There was no way I thought I’d win that out of such a big group,” Holmes said about his time in the 26 rider breakaway.
“I’ve never raced on a hill before. I’ve been in racing in Britain for the past six years which isn’t a bad thing. This is my second hilltop finish this week and it seems to suit me.
“We came into today with no plan at all, so we all thought we’d just go for the breakaway. We really did work together well.
“Not that there was very much pressure on me, but I can relax now and focus on the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race and get back to helping Caleb (Ewan).”
