Ewan outclasses rivals in Sterling

Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) took his second win of the 2020 season after coming from behind to outsprint defending champion Daryl Impey and Nathan Haas in a commanding fashion. The Australian powerhouse takes over the ochre jersey from yesterday’s stage winner, Sam Bennett, but both have the same time.

The first attack of the day went off straight away with Rosskopf shooting out of the peloton with one thing in mind, getting the king of the mountains jersey on his back. That he did after claiming both Charleston KOMS ahead of his breakaway companions. His efforts gave him a total of 25 points in the mountains standing after today’s stage.

Rosskopf was joined by Laurens De Vreese (AST), Samuel Jenner (AUS) and Omer Goldstein (ISN) for the majority of the ride around the stage 3 circuits. They worked well toether, but the peloton, led by Sam Bennett’s Deceuninck-Quick-Step team, never let the breakaway gain much of an advantage and held them at a little more than a minute for most of the stage.

The peloton was never that far behind but were reticent to make that final catch. With the gap dwindling down to inside a minute, Laurens De Vreese rode clear to put his name in the hat for the most combative rider prize and dangled in front of the main bunch until 20km to go, when the Belgian rider was swallowed up and the sprint teams took over.

A few crashes marred the closing kilometres of the stage and affected more than 40 riders, including Andre Griepel. By the time the remaining riders turned the corner to the line, it looked like George Bennett might have the advantage, but Ewan floored it and handily came from behind to take his second win of the year.
