Race Recap
Garcia Cortina upsets favorites in La Chartre
Ivan Garcia Cortina (Bahrain-McLaren) shocked everyone, perhaps even himself, after taking the win in La Chatre after 212.5km of arduous racing. The 24-year-old Spanish rider out kicked Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) and Andrea Pasqualon (Circus-Wanty Gobert), who finished second and third respectively. A late crash, metres from the line, dashed the chances of other sprinters like Sam Bennett and Caleb Ewan.
“It’s amazing,” Cortina told reporters after the stage. “It’s a race I really like so it’s a nice victory. I was surprised to beat Peter Sagan. I managed to find the right place to go. I went full gas. I suffered in the rain like everybody else. But I really like these conditions. Hopefully, it’ll go on.”
Maximilian Schachmann still holds the yellow jersey for the Bora-hansgrohe team. The German champion is 13 seconds ahead of yesterday’s stage winner, Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT Pro Cycling) and 21 seconds in front of Jasper Stuyven (Trek Segafredo).
“The last 19 kilometres were really difficult, just to secure the position in the front,” Schachmann said. “Everybody was ready for a big crosswind action but it actually took place in the last eight kilometres. In the end there were a few bad crashes. I hope nobody is injured. In the end I made it. I showed in the past I could ride good time trials. I want to defend this beautiful jersey. I’m going to try my best. Tomorrow is the next challenge. I’m going to give my best and then there are two hilly mountain stages. They will be the big showdown.”
Tom Devriendt (Circus Wanty Gobert) was the solo rider off the front for the majority of today’s stage, one that took almost six hours to complete.
The Belgian’s lead reached a max of nine minutes and 15 seconds before Bora-hansgrohe took to the front and brought it down to a firm seven minutes.
His solo journey was inevitably brought to a close with 25km to go by Deceuninck-Quick Step, Team Sunweb and Bahrain-McLaren, keen to bring it together for a bunch sprint. \nJust as in previous days, crashes and mechanical marred the final run in to the finish, however Schachmann steered clear of danger to safely stay in yellow for yet another day. \n
