Deignan wins in Nice
Lizzie Deignan (Trek Segafredo) proved she was back to top form after outsprinting La Course's defending champion Marianne Vos (CCC) to take the La Course by the Tour de France win in Nice, France today.
Demi Vollering (Parkhotel Valkenburg) finished an excellent third after 96km of racing around a tough circuit.
The 2015 world champion worked with team mate Elisa Longo-Borghini in textbook fashion to overcome threats by world champion Annemiek van Vleuten and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon) after breaking away on the second ascent up Cote de Rimiez.
It was at that point, the second time up the Cote de Rimiez, where van Vleuten really dug deep to challenge the peloton, and only five could hold her wheel. The leaders quickly grew a gap of more than a minute by the time they reached the top of the 5 kilometre climb and never looked back. \n \nAs the kilometres clicked away, Trek Segafredo took advantage of having two riders in the break, and began to challenge their competitors' weaknesses by launching well timed attacks. Under the kilometre banner, van Vleuten attempted a big attack, but it was not to be, as Vos countered about 500metres from the line. She appeared to have it in the bag, but an acceleration from Deignan and a well-timed bike throw saw the win go to the Yorkshire rider. \n
