Bevin upsets favorites on stage 2 of TDU\nBy Clara Beard
Paddy Bevin outkicked pre-stage favorites Caleb Ewan and Peter Sagan to claim stage 2 of the Tour Down Under today. The New Zealander won by a full bike length ahead of the two sprinters to take the win in Angaston.
Bevin and other sprint favorites avoided a late crash that took out half of the peloton to charge to the line. Luis León Sánchez (Astana) was the first jump, a move that Bevin took advantage of and managed to slip by him on the uphill finish to take the first win for CCC Team.
Bevin’s win put him into the ochre jersey, five seconds ahead of Elia Viviani. Caleb Ewan is third at nine seconds.
Another shortened stage due to the oppressive heat of the Adelaide summer saw Jason Lea (UniSA-Australia), and Arytom Zakharov (Astana) depart from the safety of the peloton and forge ahead together, just as they did in yesterday’s stage.
Movistar’s Jaime Castrillo joined them, and the three set off to spend some bonding time ahead of the peloton before eventually being reabsorbed around 50 kilometres from the line.
The pace shuddered to a slow pace after the breakaway was caught, which prompted Groupama-FDJ’s Mathieu Ladagnous to try his hand at a breakaway. The Frenchman stayed away for quite a while, even gaining an advantage of two minutes before the sprinters’ teams started to organize.
Contrary from yesterday’s frantic finish, today’s stage was much more organized, with most teams in unison before the final 500 metres. Sanchez took a flyer to try and catch the lead out train unaware but was swallowed up after Bevin caught his slipstream and shot forward to the win.
