Vollering outlasts Niewiadoma to win world road race title in Montreal
Demi Vollering of the Netherlands claimed the women’s elite road race world title in Montreal, beating Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma in a tense two-rider sprint after 180.4 kilometers of racing and 2,570 meters of climbing.
Vollering and Niewiadoma were given the same finishing time of 4:45:09, with Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini taking bronze four seconds later. Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser finished fourth, eight seconds behind.
The race began in Brossard before entering Montreal’s punishing 12.3-kilometer finishing circuit, where riders faced repeated climbs including Côte Camillien-Houde and Côte de la Polytechnique. The final 560 meters also rose at an average gradient of 4%, making it a brutal place to settle the rainbow jersey.
An early breakaway formed with Beatriz Roxo of Portugal, Gergana Stoyanova of Bulgaria, Marte Berg Edseth of Norway and American Natalie Quinn. The quartet built an advantage of more than two minutes before the Dutch squad moved to the front of the peloton and began methodically bringing it back.
The race became increasingly selective on the circuits. With about 74 kilometers remaining, the break had been swept up, and the Netherlands remained firmly in control, though a series of attacks soon splintered the front group.
France’s Maeva Squiban made a bold solo move with just under 50 kilometers to go, opening a 30-second advantage. Vollering answered with a decisive attack of her own with 36 kilometers remaining, catching and dropping Squiban before continuing alone.
A chase group containing Longo Borghini, Reusser, Niewiadoma, Puck Pieterse, Juliette Berthet and others worked behind her, but Vollering held about 20 seconds with 22 kilometers remaining.
Niewiadoma was the rider who finally made the biggest dent in that margin, launching a hard attack with 19 kilometers to go. Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma joined Vollering at the front shortly afterward, setting up a fierce final lap.
Longo Borghini attacked at the bell but could not make the move stick. She was dropped with 10 kilometers to go, leaving Vollering and Niewiadoma to decide the championship.
Niewiadoma tried to seize the initiative inside the final kilometer, jumping early on the uphill run-in. But she cramped in the sprint, allowing Vollering to power past and take the title.
Behind the podium trio, France’s Berthet finished fifth at 39 seconds, while Pieterse was sixth at 1:36. France’s Célia Gery, Poland’s Dominika Włodarczyk, Squiban and Germany’s Franziska Koch completed the top 10.
